Congratulations to last week’s IM Athlete of the Week, Casey Blue “Kiki Vandeweghe” James (2012). Like Vandeweghe before her, James has come to the rescue of a struggling, winless team. After taking up the reins of the wild stallion that is Saybrook IM Coed Innertube Waterpolo, Casey Blue has guided her team from the depths of winlessness to the slightly-shallower waters of near-winlessness. Indeed, the victory-by-forfeit over winless TD can be chalked up to James’ incredible skills in participation. Also like Vandeweghe, Casey has a hippie name. Is “Blue” a middle name, a first name or simply a twisted joke by her parents? Unfortunately, like Vandeweghe’s Nets, the answer to this conundrum is lost to time.
Does this comparison make maligned polo captain Carl Johnson first aid courses peterborough an analogue for Lawrence Frank? Perhaps. More importantly, however, it highlights the awesome power of participation. A wise man once said that 12.5% of life is just showing up, and Casey’s 1-7 polo squad is no exception. So here’s to you, Casey, for showing up when someone else didn’t. Casey will earn 30 Hudak points and the respect of her peers.

Honorable mention goes out to Leslie Roberson (2011) for, once again, finishing a close second in the AoW voting. Leslie is actually good at sports.

Another honorable mention goes out to Drew “Stack ‘em Sky High” Ruben (2011), whose lineup machinations brought Saybrook IM Squash within grasping distance of the title for the second consecutive year.

Finally, an honorable mention goes out to Ian Halpern (2010). Ian scored all 5 of Saybrook’s goals in a tough 7-5 loss to Stiles. Unfortunately for Ian, whose 4th place finish in AoW voting leaves him off the podium, it takes more than stats to succeed in sports.

Keep playing lots of IMs. We’re within chomping distance of TD for second place in the Tyng Cup standings. For a more concrete image of what we are about to do to their college, please view this short educational film:

Happy Pitchers & Catchers,
Your IM Secretaries

“Many teams have found it was tougher than they anticipated to defend a championship, even with high expectations. The 1997 Packers were 11 point favorites to repeat as Super Bowl champs, but couldnt pull it off. USC was four minutes away from repeating as BCS champs with a 12 point lead and couldn’t hold on. Even Miley couldn’t hold off Selena Gomez at this years Kids Choice awards for best female actress. And despite not having Brett Favre, Matt Leinart or Reggie Bush, Saybrook managed to defend two fall titles with undefeated seasons in record fashion. In football, the team won its fourth championship in five years, with the senior class enjoying three 11-0 perfect seasons. In soccer, Saybrook went the entire season without allowing a goal, with standout goalie Matt Kremer rarely called upon to make a save, en route to a second straight undefeated campaign. With the Cantabs on the horizon for two games at the end of the year once again, and Master Hudak and Saybrook coed football getting a big win last week, Saybrook IMs are on a roll and hoping to carry their momentum into the winter season.”

Congratulations to this week’s IM athlete of the week, Zachary “Zach Marx” Marks (2010). Zach, a model renaissance athlete, brings his skills each week to the football field, tennis courts, soccer pitch and pingpong cave.

As an American footballer, Zach highlights the running game of Saybrook’s gender-neutral “wildcat” offense (earning him the nickname “the cougar”). As a pingponger, Zach’s cautious style and “I’ll wait till my opponent gets tired” attitude has led some to call him “the human backboard.” When playing tennis, Zach makes up for his lack of technical skill by using his broad chest, thick arms and powerful thighs to physically outmatch his opponent. On the soccer pitch, he mostly just stands there. So here’s to you, Zach, for embodying the spirit of a true IM athlete: If you’re not good at anything, play a little bit of everything. Zach will, of course, receive 30 Hudak points and the respect of his peers.

An honorable mention goes out to Kate Penziner (2011). She didn’t actually play any IM sports this week, but she thought about it REALLY hard. Here’s hoping we see “the Mistress of Mayhem” on the fields this week.

That goes for the rest of you as well–Saybrook has definitively established itself in third place, but to make the leap up in the standings we need you all to participate (especially if you’re a girl).

Congratulations to this week’s IM Athlete of the Week, Jeremy “Slow Twitch” Lent (2011). Jeremy’s blinding speed on the XC course earned Saybrook’s men a spot in the upcoming finals.

Jeremy is owned in only 45% of Yahoo! Mixed Leagues. In comparison, Justin “I USED to be a high school track star” Chukumba (2010) is owned in an inflated 89% of leagues. Owners should nab Jeremy while they still can.

Honorable mention to Ian Halpern (2010) for his two tap-in goals against top-ranked TD this week to keep the men’s soccer team undefeated (and unscored upon). Maybe if Halpern put in that little bit of extra effort he would win one of these weeks. Let that be a lesson to you all–it takes more than talent to succeed in this league. You need to have heart.

Whaddup Saybrook. Here’s our IM Update for the week:

Currently, we’re in 8th place with 45 points.

Here’s our record as of the 23rd, except for golf (click on the sport to see the schedule of games):

Coed Ping Pong: 1-1

Coed Volleyball: 3-1

Men’s Soccer: 1-0

Women’s Soccer: 0-3

Coed Football: 0-1

Men’s Football: 1-0

Golf: 0-0

Coed Tennis: 0-0

Men’s XC: 0-0

Women’s XC: 0-0

(Updates from this week not included in our point totals yet: wins in ping pong, men’s football, and tennis, and a loss in coed football)

Here’s Saybrook’s weekly IM Update from the Yale Herald:

Saybrook fell victim to a few early setbacks, including late scheduling and some inclement weather, which knocked them back into eleventh place. However, with soccer and football season now underway, things appear to be turning around for the Saybrugians. The defense of two titles began in strong form last week with two shutout victories in men’s football and soccer, and with new Master and co-ed football team member Paul Hudak providing Rex Ryan-like inspiration for that squad. In addition to Sunday practice, improvement seems imminent for the Co-ed team. Female racket sports all-stars Leslie Golden, Kate Penziner, and Kate Macauley have kept Saybrook afloat on both the outdoor and table tennis courts.

From the football fields to the table tennis courts, Saybrook’s excitement is high, and they expect the results to follow. And for those who drafted Saybrook men’s football as their fantasy team defense, they probably won their week one matchup

(Compiled by people who would probably take the time to play IM Fantasy Football if it existed)

Congratulations to Nimit Jain, our first athlete of the week! Nimit’s passion for IMs and Saybrook paid off as he helped bring us big victories in pingpong and soccer. His come-from-behind victory against Berkeley in pingpong helped fuel a great end to the week, as Saybrook may find itself as high as third place when the standings are re-calculated.

Nimit will receive 30 IM points which he can use to get all sorts of cool gear and Squishe food. For Nimit, the possibilities are truly endless. The moral of the story is that you should come out and play IMs in the hopes that someday you too may win this high honor and bring glory to Saybrook. We’ve got big games this week and need A LOT of girls, so be sure to come out.

Hola Saybrook Freshmen!

So here is a short post about how the mailing system works at Yale. You basically get your mail in 4 places, depending on your carrier (I know this sounds ridiculous):

1) UPS– Your mail will go to Hendrie Hall on Elm Street. There is a UPS station in the basement there, and you have to show your Yale ID to get your package. If you know that your package is coming by UPS, you can send it directly to Hendrie Hall (see yale.edu/campusmap for address of Hendrie Hall) under your name, or you can send it to the following address (this is what I do, and I will explain later why I do this):

Your Name
Street Address of Your Residential College
Residential College Name
Yale University
New Haven, CT-065__

You will get an email when your package arrives.

2) FedEx and other carriers (not USPS though)– Your mail goes to the master’s office in your residential college. The address to be used for such carriers is again:

Your Name
Street Address of Your Residential College
Residential College Name
Yale University
New Haven, CT-065__

You will get an email when your package arrives.

So, I use this address for all mail that is not coming by USPS (for UPS, FedEx and everything else) because many times you are unsure of the carrier that is going to be used. UPS Packages addressed in this way are automatically directed to Hendrie Hall; so, there is no problem at all.

3) USPS– Your mail comes to your P.O.Box. I think you will be having your box numbers by now. Please make sure to go the post office in the basement of Lanman Wright Hall or LDub on Old Campus to pay the yearly deposit for your box as soon as you arrive on campus. Long lines often result during orientation. The address for packages coming by USPS goes like:

Your Name
P O Box _____
New Haven
CT- 06520-(last 4 digits of your box)

You do not receive an email in this case.

If you are entirely unsure about your carrier, use the following address (though you should try and find out for convenience):

Your Name
Street Address of Your Residential College
Residential College Name
P O Box _____
New Haven
CT- 065__ (zip for your college)

4) Campus mail– This is not used as frequently. You may get occasional mails from the Yale Health Plan or the library system in your campus mail boxes. These are typically located on the first floor of your dorms, and are free of charge. You may be sharing these with your suite-mates.

I know the mailing system at Yale in slightly complicated, and I hope this post helps. See yale.edu/campusmail for further details.

If not addressed properly, your mail can get severely delayed (not a nice thing during the first few weeks of the semester when you are getting books from Amazon etc.). See you guys in a week!
