Chapter 2: Getting Involved—Extracurriculars at Yale
Dear Saybrook Freshmen,
As promised in one of my earlier posts, here is my scoop on getting involved in extracurriculars at Yale. Since my freshman year, I have tried to be involved in as many diverse and random activities as possible. I have given tours, practiced with the Club Table Tennis Team, played the cow-bell with the YPMB (Yale Precision Marching Band), called admitted students for the admissions office, and coordinated the activities of the Yale Scientific Magazine and the Yale Undergraduate Society for Biological Sciences. Here, however, I will talk about three ventures that I have started at Yale, namely a diabetes forum, a carrom club, and a classic rock society.
But first, a bit about starting a registered organization on campus; even though Yale has 800+ organizations, there can be things that you want to do that do not exist on campus. This has a simple conceptual solution (though a harder practical one): start your own student organization. Yale is truly great in that it gives you the liberty to do whatever you want (as long as it is constructive). The application for registration can be found on the student affairs website (the link is posted in my 21 websites post). Now, I talk briefly about the above mentioned three organizations:

The Forgotten SCC Budget Proposals
Unfortunately, this was not a good year for bold budget proposals. Here are the proposals that never made it onto this year’s official SCC budget proposal list. [Editor's Note: Charlie may or may not have made all these proposals, and BT may or may not have rejected all of them.]
A lonely hot tub in need of Saybrugians
SY Spa System
Total: $4,499 (plus shipping, tax)
Given the ever-increasing weight of the dismal job market hanging over our collective shoulders, combined with the paralyzing stresses of our current economic recession, we Saybrugians need the warm, relaxing caresses of a Saybrook Spa even more than ever. This spa would strengthen the Saybrook community immensely through fostering both inter- and intra- class camaraderie. Having a Saybrook spa will prove absolutely essential in Saybrook’s daring attempt to accomplish what no residential college has ever achieved before- to triumphantly and simultaneously win both the Tyng and Gimble Cups this year, which could only be accomplished through utilizing the improvements in physical and mental well-being a spa grants its users. Although this proposal was very unfortunately rejected last year, this was surely due to the selfishness of last year’s budget voters, who failed to consider the benefits this spa system would have to not only ourselves, but also to future Saybrugians for years and years to come, including but not limited to our many future, precocious, beautiful offspring, all of whom will live in Saybrook. But I digress. The most important reason why we need this spa is because Saybrook is the best residential college at Yale, always has been and always will be.
The dets: This spa system is large enough for six students. The Infinity Crown’s two speaker and subwoofer stereo system, LED perimeter lights, color-changing LED light, and waterfall set it apart as the ideal spa system for Saybrook College.

How can you say no to this?
Saybrook Seals
Total: $2347 + Shipping and Handling
Did you know the Seal is Saybrook’s official mascot? I bet not. I had no idea until this year and I’m sure neither did almost anyone else. This likely stems from the fact that its only presence within the Saybrook community in recent history is the small seal icon located on the back of this year’s Saybrook Moving Crew t-shirts. If we want the seal to be our mascot, we need to own it. Literally.
-A picture of a seal: $2
-A small, furry, cute, white stuffed seal: $10
-A Sayrook Seal suit: $250
-An adult-sized Mediterranean monk seal: $2185 + Shipping and Handling
A Life-Sized Statue of Master Hudak Made of Solid Gold
Total: $32,000 (in semesterly installments of $1000)
Lastly, as I’m sure you’re all aware by now, Master Hudak is the man. I hope he’ll serve as our Master for many years come. However, when the sad day does come when his tenure as Master does finally end, we need to be prepared. With that in mind, we have to start saving money now to be able to purchase a pure gold life-sized statue in his honor when this does happen. Starting saving with installments of $1000 a semester is certainly reasonable and is really the minimum we should be putting forth towards such a noble and worthy cause.
In conclusion, BAR pizza, parties, and the SCC are temporary, but a life-sized golden statue in our Master’s likeness is forever.
Saybrooks 2009 ycc Candidates
Hey Saybrook!
It’s YCC Fall Election time again! It’s very important for to exercise your right to vote, so Saybrook can have best possible representatives for the YCC (for more reasons, refer to the American Revolution). The Saybrook representatives to the FCC, SCC, JCC, YCC Activities and YCC Issues committees will all be determined by your vote. Don’t let your laziness disenfranchise you!
Voting for YCC candidates has never been easier. All you have to do is go to http://yalestation.org/ycc/elections and fill in a couple of bubbles for each candidate (for tips, refer to Princeton Review). The polls close on Friday at 9pm.
This an exciting year for Saybrook and the YCC, since our very own Jon Wu ’11 at the it’s helm. By voting, you can help him assemble the best possible team for accomplishing the YCC’s goals for this year. To get a better idea of what the YCC does, here’s an excerpt about what the YCC plans to accomplish year. It comes from an email about running for YCC office that Jon Wu sent out to all Yale students last week, in case you missed it:

Greetings Saybrook!
As many of you may know, it has become an annual tradition to hold a Saybrook Assassins game. Every year, Saybrugians get pretty involved, with some doing whatever it takes to win. It’s a great way to meet your fellow Saybrugians and it’s always a lot of fun.
Typically, there are three ways to kill you target:
- Shooting- with a water pistol
- Electrocution- by touching an illuminated light fixture with one hand and your target with another
- Poison- by slipping a raisin into your target’s drink during a meal
