DJ RJ’s Picks, Spring Break edition: Gorillaz, Hot Chip, Wale, Foals, and more!

Its spring break! That means 1: I have time to write a lengthy post, and 2: you should have time to listen to it all. Also, this week I’m starting a “guest pick” portion to the blog—you’ll get to get a sample of what my friends from my small hometown of Los Angeles like listening to.

1. Gorillaz: “On Melancholy Hill”

So first things first: GORILLAZ. I’ve been waiting for their new album for a while and they have not disappointed. This is by easily my favorite song from their album. You’ll find yourself whistling this tune to yourself for the next few weeks. Or maybe that’s just me…whatever.

DJ RJ’s Picks: Kinetics & One Love, Moam, and DallasK

I haven’t written in almost two months, so I’ve decided to make this my best post ever. No big deal or anything, but below I’ve given you songs from the best unknown rap group, a great Gorillaz mashup, an addictive indie tune, a killer Britney Spears remix, and the best trance song I HAVE EVER HEARD.
So buckle up for some new songs and be sure to give all of them a chance. You won’t be disappointed.

You know how you hear people say “I heard about them before anyone else”? Well now is your chance. Ladies and gents, I present to you the rap group Kinetics & One Love. Although their name might need some work, their music definitely does not. And did I mention that they’re both Ivy League students? (Cornell, more specifically). This unsigned duo released Fading Back to Normal in 2009, an album that shows just how good Kinetics’ rhymes are.
Without a doubt, their most stunning song has to be “The New Colossus” a song that takes smart lyrics to a new level. Spelling “kinetics” in Greek letters? Check. Quoting Emma Lazarus’ Statue of Liberty poem? Check. Talking about the Coriolis Effect? Check.
My roommate (and hip-hop enthusiast) Jeff has nothing but praises for this song: “I’ve listened to this song every day for the last month and each day I discover something new that changes my life.” So without further ado, I give you three of their best songs. You can download the album for free on kineticsmusic.com Let’s hope they keep it up.
4. Gorillaz: “19-2000 Funk”

Gorillaz. They’re finally back. In March they’re releasing their third album and will be headlining Coachella the following month. Right now I’m praying that they’ll do a nationwide tour, as they’re definitely on my top-5 “still haven’t seen live” bands. Here’s a mashup of Gorillaz and Daft Punk. (shout-out to friend and Gorillaz fan Dalia).

5. The Whitest Boy Alive: “Burning”

This song may be from a few years ago, but it by no means has gotten old. I was just listening to it this morning and just had this realization that more people had to hear this tune. Their guitar work is on another level. Oh, and they’re about to embark on their first ever US tour, complete with a stop at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom on Apr. 20.

6. Britney Spears: “3 (DallasK remix)

Every post I try to find a new remix to spice up your party playlist. This one is no exception.

7. Example: “Watch the Sun Come Up (Moam remix)”

No joke, this may be the best electronic song I’ve ever heard. Absolutely stunning.

Hope you enjoy the songs. Until next time, R.J.

Meet your new SAC chairs, Casey Blue and Calah

Congrats to Casey Blue James and Calah Singleton for being elected SAC chairs this week! Will they be able to fill Kate and Cameron’s rather large shoes? Only time will tell, but rumor has it Alli Bauer ’12 has volunteered to help them out by sharing equal SAC responsibility, just without the official title (she was nominated for the position as well, but withdrew her name from the running).

DJ RJ’s Picks 12/11: The xx, Friendly Fires, Shout Out Loads, and Kid Cudi

Last Saturday I went to New York with two fellow sophomore Saybrugians to see Friendly Fires and The xx at Webster Hall. It was a great show from two of the hottest British indie bands. So I’ll start the blog off with them.

1. The xx: “Shelter (Death to the Throne remix)”

I posted a song by The xx last month, so this time I’ll give you a remix that gives this song a much more danceable beat

2. Friendly Fires: “Skeleton Boy”

It was hard to choose which Friendly Fires song to select—their debut album is almost flawless—but have a listen to Skeleton Boy, which also has a great music video:

3. Shout Out Louds: “Walls”

Some of the best music news of the past month came when I found out that Shout Out Louds—a superb band from Stockholm, Sweden—were coming out with a new album (their third) in February. They’ve already released their first new single, and although the first thirty seconds may be dull, the song really picks up and turns into a great tune.

4. Kid Cudi: “Pursuit of Happiness (Steve Aoki remix)”

This already good song has been given an electronic reworking to make this an even better party song.

In terms of upcoming concerts, Muse tickets to their March 5 show at Madison Square Garden go on-sale this Saturday (12/12) at noon, so don’t be late if you want to see them. See you next semester!

DJ R.J.’s Picks 11/17

Hey Saybrook,

Sorry I’m late with my blog post, my bad. I just hope you don’t take it out on the great songs I’m about to share with you.

1. Wale: “Mirrors”

First up we’ve got Wale. Most likely you were doing “other things” when he played early in the afternoon during last year’s Spring Fling, but now his debut album has finally arrived you may be rethinking that decision. I’ve been waiting for this since last spring, and now that it’s here, the D.C. rapper does not disappoint. I’m going to give you two for the money on this one, including “Mirrors,” which is my favorite track on the album.

2. Wale: “90210″

“90210″ is also a solid song and has some hard-hitting lyrics about LA culture.

3. The Clipse vs. Phoenix: “Wampomania”

I just found this mash-up five minutes ago, and already I’m obsessed. DJ Die mixes The Clipse over the amazing guitar work of Phoenix’s “Lisztomania.” Enjoy.

4. Little Boots: “Earthquake”

I’ve just given you three rap songs. Now it’s time for a dance track. I can’t say that I’ve ever listened to Little Boots before hearing this track, but this remix is great

5. The Swell Season: “High Horses”

Download here.

Okay now to conclude the post, it’s time for a change of pace. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova—the two stars of indie smash “Once”—are back with their second “Swell Season” album. The emotion behind these two musician’s voices makes for absolutely beautiful music. Take a listen to “High Horses.”
Have a good one.

DJ R.J.’s Picks 11/02

Hey Saybrook,

My name is R.J. Rico (’12) and I’m gonna be writing a weekly music post on this site. Maybe I’ll come up with a witty, ironic title, but for now, let’s just call it R.J.’s Picks. With these posts I have two goals:

1. To expose you to great (and oftentimes new) indie, dance, and rap tracks. There will be songs from new bands most people haven’t heard of, and cool remixes/mashups of standard party songs for your next suite party. You don’t have to be a hipster just to read this!

2. To keep you updated with the local concert calendar. Believe it or not, there are other places to go besides Toad’s. Every week, there are awesome concerts in NYC, which is only an hour and a half away by train. I made 5 trips there last year and right now, already have plans for 3 this semester. It’s a great way to take a break with friends and just get out of New Haven for the night (until you return dead tired around 2 am).

So before I give you this week’s four picks, here’s a little bit about my tastes in music. My favorite genre is definitely British indie, which ranges from Bloc Party (by far my favorite band) to The Libertines to Franz Ferdinand. Besides that, I love dance music: MSTRKRFT, Justice, Daft Punk, The Hood Internet, etc. My favorite rappers are Lupe Fiasco and Wale. And being from LA, I’ve grown up on the “chill” alternative scene: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Jack Johnson, and Death Cab for Cutie. Okay, enough about what I like…here’s some stuff I’ll hope you’ll like. (Note: you can download the songs by clicking on the link and following a few steps, but I encourage you to legally download the rest of these artists’ works if you are looking for more.)

.

1. The xx: “Crystalised”

This band is the hottest thing on the blogosphere right now. With a female vocalist, a male backup singer, and some minimalist guitars, this British (note the spelling of this song’s title) band has created a unique and dark, yet catchy atmosphere. Their album just launched this past week and mine’s already in the mail. Hopefully, yours will be to after listening to this tune.

2. Tiesto: “Knock You Out” feat. Emily Haynes

Here’s a taste of the newest album from Europe’s biggest DJ, Tiesto. It gives you the feeling that you’re in Ibiza or some other random Mediterranean city, with nothing to do but to go to a 100,000 person music festival.

3. Blue Scholars: “HI-808″

Although Blue Scholars may not make the catchy, loud hip-hop that we hear during the weekends, they make some great, smooth beats that are good for any time of day. 808 is Honolulu’s area code and this song is a tribute to Hawaii, “the best damn place in the world [besides Saybrook, of course] to wake up,” as the Scholars say. Here’s a look at their new EP.

4. The Hood Internet: “Cult Logic Forever” (Drake vs. Miike Snow)

This DJ duo injects a dose of hyper danceability into Drake’s hit “Forever.” Who doesn’t love a song that has a guy saying “last name ever, first name greatest”? Hopefully, you had a chance to catch the Hood Internet in Commons last winter for what was almost the best concert of the year (its tough to beat Spring Fling).

The Local Concert Calendar

Each week, I’ll update you on notable shows that have been announced so you can get tickets in time. There are too many to list, but this site has a great calendar: http://www.bowerypresents.com/fullcalendar.

Notable mentions (all of the following still have tickets available):

Peter Bjorn and John (Nov 9 and 10)
Deadmau5 (Nov 25)
Friendly Fires and The xx (Dec. 5)…two great upstart British bands.
Arctic Monkeys (Dec. 10 and 11)
Passion Pit (Jan. 8, 9, 10)…right before the 2nd semester starts!
Cold War Kids (Jan. 29)

One final note: please give me feedback! Love a certain song? Hate another one? Want to hear recommendations of similar artists? Want to suggest a name for my blog posts?

Have a great week.
