There are a number of criteria on which scholarships are awarded that usually depend on the purpose of the donor. Students are not required to repay their scholarship money. However, in some cases students are required to work for a specific period of time to compensate for the value of money they received from the scholarship. Worldwide distribution of scholarships shows that a majority of scholarships are distributed in South Asian and African countries. Among the total scholarships distributed in the year 2012, Europe had only 3% while North America had around 10-15% of all scholarships.
