In 1991, Ravi Kuchimanchi and Aravinda Pillamarri founded the Association for India’s Development, AID, to address interconnected social development issues present in India ranging from sustainability to corruption to human rights. Through their tireless work, AID has worked on nearly 400 development projects. In 1997, AID received the International History Week Humanitarian Leadership Award from the House of Representatives in recognition of their humanitarian contributions. In 2004, they inspired the popular Bollywood award-winning Ashutosh Gowarikar movie Swades.
In the United States, AID has 35 chapters, with many of them centered around universities such as the Duke chapter (http://www.duke.edu/web/aid/Aboutus.htm) and the Princeton chapter (http://princeton.aidindia.org/cms/index.php). Each chapter has anywhere from five to ten projects at any given time that they are constantly fund-raising; these projects can be created by AID itself and assigned to chapters, but each chapter also has projects that they create, initiate, and run, with many volunteers actually doing on-site work on their project sites. To find out more about the projects AID is involved in, visit their website here.”
